“Ahh shuttup Morty, you don’t gettit…just *burp* I don’t know, give it a go…

With so many reboots and shows trying to replicate the success of others, Rick and Morty is refreshing in its originality.

The brilliance of this show not only comes from Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon’s amazing writing, but that we are getting to see an animation in its prime. A freshness that keeps it exciting in its irreverence that we don’t get from other adult orientated animation.

As much as I am a die-hard fan of The Simpsons, it’s hard to admit that it’s pretty toothless in its current form. A show that no longer has the comedic hold of its 90s beginnings. The same could definitely be said of Family Guy, a Seth McFarlane show that strains under his animation juggling act.

Rick and Morty also wins in that it’s directed purely at adults. It doesn’t try to give “wink-wink nudge-nudge* style mature humour of Adventure Time and its contemporaries. Rick is about being out right crass and we love him for it! I mean he’s already completely defecated on the round table of an intergalactic war room this season, and we still have more to come.

The detractors of Rick and Morty, may say that it’s all random for random’s sake, but those people don’t see how clever the storytelling and emotional beats are in a show that can literally take place in any planet or dimension. Rick Sanchez is the most intelligent being in the universe, to the extent that his meta-humour guides the episodes and balances out some of the absurdity.

Finally- when we live in a time where Donald Trump is president, we need a cartoon that takes off its pants and panties, and s**** on the floor. It’s time to get schwifty in here!
