So after a frantic 50 hours or so of diarrhea inducing anxiety we finally have the answer to a lot of questions about Cyberpunk 2077 and (frustratingly) still no gameplay! There are rumours that we will see gameplay at Gamescom 2018, but those are just rumours. CD Project Red has just announced that they will be showing us something on their Xbox Live and over Twitch later this evening from around 8:50 PM (GMT) according to their Twitter account, while I am hopeful, I don't think we will get to see any gameplay.
With any luck, as the week progresses CD Project Red will reveal what they have been showing off behind closed doors at E3 2018. But until then we only have what those lucky enough to have seen this report back to go on.
So what did we get from the studio that brought us The Whitcher games? Well, we got a new shiny trailer which shows off a much different vision that the original trailer portrayed. But the original was made more as a concept by a separate company at the games conception so was never expected to be completely accurate. After this reveal CD Project Red went silent on the game for a whole five years. But is has now sprung into life and became the saving grace of the Xbox press conference at E3 2018.
Their twitter account is tweeting with the joys of spring and they have also opened an official discord channel. They are now engaging with fans so I am hopeful that more information will be coming soon.
So what do we know so far?
Although we haven't seen any gameplay as of yet, there was a lot of information that has been coming out about the game and gameplay.
Firstly, and apparently controversially, there is the matter of the gameplay being mainly from the first-person perspective. This has upset fans to the point that CD Project Red have actually had to defend this decision. I personally don't have a problem with this, but that is what this all comes down to; personal preference. They have assured us that there will be plenty of opportunities to see the character that we create in the game.
Speaking of the character we create, in a post show interview with GameSpot the Associate Design Director, Kyle Rowley confirmed a lot of information about the game and gave us a greater insight into it.
Namely that you play as 'V'; a male or female character that is fully customisable and fully voiced. You have a vehicle that you can drive (and hopefully, fly) and an apartment that can be customised and upgraded as the game progresses. It seems that this acts as your base of operations for the game.
You can pick a unique background for your character before starting your game but not the class. It sounds as though they are aiming for a 'classless' game system which I am personally a little disappointed with. I was hoping for the classes to work the same way that they do for the Cyberpunk 2020/22 pen & paper role playing game, but they have previously stated that all classes will be present, so it will be interesting to see how these all work out.
Finally, we know that Mike Pondsmith, the writer of the original Cyberpunk 2020 game is around at E3 2018 and is also working on an updated version of the Cyberpunk game to coincide with the release of the video game. I am hoping he will update us about the pen & paper game as well as the video game as I cannot wait to play this on all possible platforms!
We will update you as more information is released.
