Domina - Retro-bit gladitors

Busyness and limited funds meant I only picked up one game over the latest Steam summer sale. That game was Domina.

In it you own and train gladiators to fight for your glory and fortune in retro pixel art and gore style. Pretty straightforward I think you’ll agree.

Each gladiator has a number of stats such as strength and defence which can be trained between matches. Hiring agents can help with additional boosters such as training buffs, faster healing and cheaper gear. A nice tech tree adds an element of strategy and planning.

In addition to the regular and exhibition matches there are multiple matches across Italy where you can challenge regional champions for additional glory and gold. Also necessary for taking part in the final fight at the end of the game.

The actual matches are mostly automated, absolutely gory and great to watch.

Well worth pointing out is the soundtrack – it is brilliant, for the first few times you hear it. Unfortunately there are just not enough tracks on loop to keep this fresh.

And this complaint is somewhat representative of Domina overall. Fun, challenging and tense gameplay can tend to subside through extended plays. But being such a light game that can be played all the way through in a few hours means you’ll probably be finished before this becomes too much of a problem.

Overall I had a lot of fun with this, well worth the money, but not sure how much more I’ll be playing it.

Thanks for reading, and as usual lovely people – play on!
